About

FAMA is a research laboratory that has operated since 2015 within the Department of Anatomy, Division of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Akdeniz University, in Block E.

The laboratory studies the form and movement of the human body together and quantitatively. To this end, optoelectronic motion analysis, surface electromyography, three-dimensional surface scanning, depth sensors and mechanical testing are used in combination. Measurements are carried out in healthy individuals as well as in patient groups defined together with clinical departments.

The laboratory also creates digital models of anatomical structures and produces physical models from them for teaching and clinical applications.

Research framework

Research is organised under two main branches:

  • Quantitative functional anatomy
    • A. Measurement and analysis
      • Morphometry — shape and size
      • Biomechanics
        • Kinematics — displacement, angle, velocity, acceleration, timing
        • Kinetics — force; tissue and material mechanics
      • Neuromuscular activity — surface EMG
      • Intersection of morphometry and kinematics: dynamic morphometry
    • B. Digital anatomy and model production
      • Digitisation — 3D surface scanning, modelling from CT/MR images
      • Production — 3D printing, silicone moulding, liquid plastic casting

Aim

To develop objective, reproducible and, as far as possible, non-invasive methods for assessing facial and trunk movement; to bring these methods into clinical research and graduate education; and to use the laboratory's facilities in joint work with clinicians, basic scientists, engineers and industry.
